Who was Ebenezer, and why is his corner north of Bridport?

I have spotted the finger post shown here a few times recently and was rather taken with the fact it has ‘Ebenezer Corner‘ emblazoned on the roundel that sits atop the signpost.

This Dorset finger post is situated just north of Bridport.  It is along Pymore Lane, the road between Bradpole and Dottery, located at the junction where you can turn off to go to Waytown and Netherbury.

Each time I see it I wonder who Ebenezer was, and why was this road junction on a quiet country lane given his name? Can anyone throw any light on this? If you know anything please share in the comments box below.
