Some interesting old local photos on the Historypin website

Historypin is a rather interesting history project facilitated by the social sharing capabilities of the internet. Users are able to upload historic photographs and ‘pin’ them to the location they were taken. Using the search facility visitors are able to locate the uploaded images on the interactive map.

There are plenty of old Dorset photos on the web site to be browsed, along with others from around the world.

I was particularly interested in some old photos I found of public houses that no longer exist. These were part of a collection from the archive of the old and now defunct Charrington brewery who it seems gathered images of their estate. West Dorset establishments I found pictures of included the Rose and Crown at Birdsmoorgate and the Golden Fleece at Holditch.

Below is a video showing how Historypin works.
