As saddened as I was to hear recently of the death of American folk singer Pete Seeger at the age of 94 I rejoiced in the full land long life he had lived. I was glad to see the British media and especially the television news bulletins giving good coverage to his passing and the contribution he had made to music over his life.
I came across Pete’s music many years ago, and reflecting back I feel saddened that I didn’t make more time to explore more of his back catalogue. In the last couple of weeks I have been trying to put that right through YouTube and thought it worth sharing a couple of finds here.
The first is a rendition of the Bob Dylan song ‘Forever Young’. It was recorded in 2012 and Pete’s singing voice has weakened so much with age that he is virtually speaking the lyrics, but it is still an extremely powerful performance.
The second song is one I came across years ago and have always found inspiring. It is an English language interpretation of the German song Die Gedanken sind frei (Thoughts are free).
