While walking around Martock near Yeovil in Somerset I was struck by this memorial to the huge number of horses killed during the Second Boer War which took place in South Africa between 1899 and 1902. The plaque in the picture is mounted on the wall of the building, beneath it is a large stone trough with an inscription that is now being used as a large flower tub.
The inscription reads:
WATER TROUGH GIVEN IN MEMORY OF THE 450,00 HORSES KILLED IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899 1902
