So who makes Dunlop wellington boots?

When I bought myself a new pair of Dunlop wellington boots I noticed on the sole it says ‘Made in Portugal‘. I thought to myself “I wonder who actually makes Dunlop boots“?

Now that may seem a stupid question, but when I was looking to buy tyres for my car I discovered that these days Dunlop tyres are owned and made by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Goodyear actually own several tyre brands, as well as Goodyear and Dunlop they make Fulda and Sava tyres.

A bit of digging revealed that Dunlop broke up back in the 1980s. The sports division was combined with Slazenger which Dunlop had previously acquired, these are now owned by Sports Direct.

According to Wikipedia Dunlop Protective Footwear was bought by Dutch company Hevea in 1996, so this is who made my wellington boots.

The old Dunlop company made a lot of different things and the Wikipedia link above shows who know owns what rights over the brand.
