Below is a filmed short news item from 1938 telling of a Town Criers contest that had just been held in Bridport. The winner, Walter Abbott, hailed from just down the road at Lyme Regis.
This was part of a Pathe Gazette newsreel. British Pathe have made a huge number of these historical insights from their library available to view online at their web site. Most of these are free to view at British Pathe but to show them anywhere else incurs a fee, which I guess is fair enough.
Luckily the short black and white clip below is one of the items British Pathe have chosen to release on YouTube as well which allows me to share it here.
