Agriculture ancient and modern – Shepherd’s hut and mini digger

I thought I would share this photo which I took in early March 2016 simply because I love the contrast between the old style shepherd’s hut and the modern mini digger. I spotted this pair while visiting the Manor Yard at Symondsbury Estate where I enjoyed a coffee and a cinnamon bun in the Symondsbury Kitchen cafe.

Shepherd’s huts used to provide shelter out in the fields to the the farm workers attending to there stock during lambing and other times. They were traditionally rudimentary and would have provided only basic comfort. These days Shepherd’s huts have become fashionable again with several companies springing up making modern versions for use private gardens and as holiday accommodation. These modern day huts are fitted with so many home comforts that old time shepherds would not have recognised them.
